Drayson Racing set new World Electric Land Speed Record

Drayson Racing is proud to announce that it has set a new World Electric Land Speed Record of 204.185mph.
Former science minister, businessman and racing driver Lord Drayson was behind the wheel of the Drayson B12 69/EV electric Le-Mans Prototype in near perfect conditions, the Oxford-based sustainable motorsport company smashed the previous 175mph record, which had stood for nearly forty years, by 29.2mph.
As the new world record holder, Lord Drayson commented: "I'm delighted we've beaten the record tonight and can show the world EVs can be fast and reliable. Drayson Racing is a laboratory for EV technology, testing it to the most extreme level, as we've seen today."
"It is not the outright speed of 204.185mph that is most impressive about this record, but the engineering challenge of accelerating a 1000kg electric vehicle on a short runway over a measured mile. However I've got a great team and world-class partners, such as Qualcomm Halo, Michelin, Multimatic and Cosworth."...

TESLA's Ninety Second Battery Swap

“Fast or free?” That’s the question Elon Musk posed last night at a special event hosted at Tesla’s Southern California design studio. What followed was the first demonstration of the automaker’s automated battery swapping system, which takes around 90 seconds to remove and replace an empty battery with a fully charged pack — quicker than it takes to fill up most cars running dead-dino juice.
Battery swapping, which Musk has been relentlessly Twitter-teasing for the past month, is something the Model S was designed to do from the onset, according to the automaker. But rather than require owners to come into a dealership or service center to have the swap performed, Tesla will be installing a number of these automated systems at its Supercharger stations situated along some of the nation’s busiest corridors, including Interstate 5 along the West Coast and between Washington, D.C. and Boston...

Siemens Hybrid Electric Aircraft Debuts in Paris

Siemens AG, Diamond Aircraft and EADS are set to present the world's first aircraft with a serial hybrid electric drive system at the Paris Air Show Le Bourget 2011. The two-seater motor glider successfully completed its maiden flight on June 8 at the Wiener Neustadt airfield in Vienna, Austria. The aircraft was built by the three partners to test the hybrid electric drive concept. In the future, the technology, which is intended for later use also in large-scale aircraft, will cut fuel consumption and emissions by 25 percent, compared to today's most efficient aircraft drives.
Air traffic accounts for some 2.2 percent of CO2 emissions worldwide. For this reason, aircraft, too, must become more efficient. One possible solution – which Siemens and its partners Diamond Aircraft and EADS are testing in the DA36 E-Star motor glider – is to electrify the drive system.
"A serial hybrid electric drive can be scaled for a wide range of uses, making it highly suitable for aircraft as well," said Dr. Frank Anton, the initiator of electric aircraft development at Siemens. "The first thing we want to do is test the technology in small aircraft. In the long term, however, the drive system will also be used in large-scale aircraft. We want to cut fuel consumption and emissions by 25 percent, compared to today's most efficient technologies. This will make air travel more sustainable."...

Williams Advanced Engineering to supply battery units to Formula E

Williams F1 have announce that Williams Advanced Engineering, the division of the Williams group that commercialises Formula One based technologies, is to partner with Spark Racing Technology to design and assemble a battery system for the 42 cars that will be used in the FIA Formula E Championship.
Spark Racing Technology was created in 2012 and is focused on the manufacture of the cars that will compete in the FIA Formula E Championship, the world’s first fully electric racing series that begins in 2014. Williams Advanced Engineering has signed an exclusive agreement with Spark Racing Technology and will be the sole supplier of battery technology to Formula E...

Hyundai plans to sell battery-electric vehicle

Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik said Wednesday the automaker plans to sell a battery-electric vehicle in the future.
“Our primary zero-emission vehicle focus is fuel cell right now, but we will certainly field a BEV (battery-electric vehicle at some point,” Krafcik said in a Twitter chat Wednesday afternoon.
Hyundai currently sells the BlueOn compact electric car in South Korea...

Toyota Hybrid Racing - Supercapacitor System Explained

The 90th Le Mans 24 Hours is approaching fast, with the test day already this Sunday, so we think it is a good time to explain a little more graphically about the TOYOTA HYBRID System – Racing (THS-R) which is at the heart of the TS030 HYBRID.
The powertrain consists of a 530hp V8, 3.4litre, normally-aspirated petrol engine combined with a 300hp hybrid system. Under braking, in the designated hybrid recovery zones, the system harvests energy which is converted into electricity by the Motor Generator Unit (MGU), located between engine and gearbox, within the gearbox housing.
This electricity is transmitted, via a DENSO inverter, into the NISSHINBO super capacitor storage device, sited next to the driver in the cockpit. When the driver accelerates, the hybrid boost is delivered automatically for around three seconds, with the electricity travelling from the super capacitor, through the inverter and into the MGU, which adds the power to that of the petrol engine and transmits it to the rear wheels...
