Airbus Developing Hybrid Electric Jet Aircraft

Added by admin 27/04/14

Airbus is learning from automakers as it works on developing a small aircraft powered by hybrid electric engines that could represent its first move into the market for regional jets.
The development of a regional plane, seating between 70 and 90 people, that can take off and land using electric power could take between 15 and 20 years, Airbus Group Chief Technology Officer Jean Botti told reporters in Munich.
Airbus, which with Boeing dominates the market for passenger jets, presently makes planes that seat more than 150 people.
Airbus is already working on an all-electric two-seater plane, powered by two electric motors with a combined output of 60 kilowatts, hoping this technology will serve as a step to bringing electric motors on to larger aircraft.
The two-seater, which Airbus says is suited for short missions such as pilot training and aerobatics, can run on its lithium-ion polymer batteries for half an hour, with the aim to get it up to an hour.
The batteries are tricky, Botti said. "They're causing us a lot of headaches."

According to the company, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, the Dynamo's electric motor can generate a maximum of 52 Kw (70 hp) of power and 155 Nm (114 lb.ft) of torque, translating to an acceleration of 0 to 50 km/h (31 mph) in 5.3 seconds.
The vehicle's battery can be charged to 80 percent in 30 minutes, while a complete 100 percent charge will take around 6 hours...

Hong Kong investor-funded EV startup revises it original plan to assembly its announced Lotus Elise-based electric sports car.

Call it Not-So-Detroit Electric, apparently. Already a year late in plans to produce a $135,000 limited-edition sports car, the start-up firm says it will turn to Holland to produce its little SP:01 model starting later this year.
But the company still hopes to return to the Motor City when it launches a more mainstream, battery-powered sedan later in the decade.
Named after a Michigan-based battery-car company that folded during the Great Depression, Detroit Electric was introduced by Hong Kong businessman Albert Lam, a former Apple executive, during a splashy news conference nearly a year ago. At the time, he admitted the project walked a fine line “between sanity and insanity,” and would be a challenge to get into production.

        Original PC World posting (19-Mar-2013)

After an absence of over 70 years, Detroit Electric, the innovative electric car manufacturer,
has returned to the legendary Motor City, promising job creation and a range of exciting 100%

Heralding the rebirth of the original electric car brand, Detroit Electric has announced the
establishment of its corporate headquarters on the 18th floor of the iconic Fisher Building,
located in downtown Detroit, with Don Graunstadt, CEO, North America Operations at
Detroit Electric, signing a long-term lease.
